Ive played about 36 hours of TF2 before, but never competitive.
I havent played in about a month or 2 because of computer issues, but I'm gettin a new one next week. I really wanna start playing again, but the recreational side of the game was starting to bore me a bit. Anyone that has any advice or anything, maybe even a beginner team? post. |

You should play low level community PUGs first, such as CP PUGs which is a popular one, and focus on one class maybe. The scout is an easy one to pick up if you are good at general aiming and movement. You can try pocket soldier too and medic if you think you are good at team co-ordination. You can try a beginners team, but those tend to rage a lot in my experience, but if you find the right one and feel you can all learn quickly together as a group it is a viable option. Here are a few links you should check out;

If anything, you need a mic.
It's more important than any amount of skill.

36 hours in tf2 is not a lot at all, if you've played other games competitively then maybe it would fly, but you'd probably be crushed by even the lowest level of competition(and by crushed i mean you'd be lucky to get more than a few points in a round). At this point in your tf2 career you should probably be pubbing, if you feel like the competition isn't enough, i (and i'm sure others) would be happy to give you the ip's of a few pubs with higher levels of competition. Try playing more of the competitive classes: scout, soldier, demo and medic and once you feel you're good enough for it i'd suggest tf2lobby.com.

Pub TF2 and Comp TF2 are very different games. I don't think pubbing will help him get better at Comp TF2 than actually playing it will, regardless of his hours played or skill level. As long as he understands the very basics, he should be o.k, and even if he doesn't he'll figure them out fast.
