Whenever I try and enter playdemo demoname in console I'm given the error
ERROR: demo network protocol 38 outdated, engine version is 1010
Is this a side effect of the latest game update, and is there any way around it?
That still isn't working for me.
Keeps coming up with this in red text:
***VPK: FastFindFile Attempting to use full path with VPK file!
File: C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\demo.dem

when source engine is updated it kills old demos
ALL of my 50 or so demos are now unviewable, if there's a way to view them plz tell.
I however don't think that is the case.

If you're new to playing Valve games, expect this to happen every few months. Luckily, there is often a way to have a standalone client based on a previous version of the game. Unfortunately, there are sometimes weird side effects to that, such as missing models or discoloration.

isnt there a command to convert to many many screenshots so u can dump them into vegas? that would save you from future loss.

I might need to keep that in mind because I lost some very good footage.

yes, but you have to do it while watching the demo... and it saves them as huge .bmp files. If you wanna go this route you are gonna need HUGE amounts of space to store it on... and i mean HUGE

Eh, these days I wouldn't consider anywhere between 200-300gb (and that's for a full 8m+ length movie) of space to be "HUGE". As already mentioned, there's usually a way to make an older version of the game work via a standalone client, but $50 for a 250gb hdd isn't too much if movie clips are so direly precious to hold on to.
Damn, Valve sucks. The demos I recorded 3 or 4 days ago don't work anymore :(
