And if so, how would I participate in them?
(sorry if there is already a thread about this. If there is, please direct me there and close/delete this)
I was wondering if you guys do regular pugs/scrims (whatever you call them here) for Versus mode
My Experience with Versus is 1 of 2 things
1. Play with random stupid people, lame
2. Play with friends, other team rages, lame
So,yeah

Join the mirc community, that's where you find scrims for the most part.
http://asylum.worldgn.com/showthread.php?t=282889 <--- mirc guide
Idle #l4d, #calscrim-l4d and you should be set for the most part. Most teams will expect you to be using cal config (note: tank every level) and the readyup plugin if you don't have it already. You can find a scrim within 20 mins most nights from 6pm-2am est. Pugs don't happen as often, but there's probably 1-2 a night.
Standard scrim procedure:
1) Advertise mirc "4v4 any map, our/your server, pm me" or something similar
2) Get/give server info "connect 89.26.337.20:72034;password=passhere" *If you don't have a server, use theirs.*
3) Get yourself and teammates in. Everyone does !ready in chat to start the game.
4) Enjoy. Most teams will expect you to follow caleague rules for the most part and some will want/demand a side switch after the first 2 maps.
If it's your team's first time scrimming, expect to lose. If you're scrimming 51, TLC, trinity, paragon, iNeX, UiS, or Reason, expect to lose badly lol. There are also several other teams that'll hand you your ass on a plate.

I always find it weird when people advertise "4v4" because I really don't think anyone would do a 3v3 or something like that...

I don't have a team, so I guess I'll be sticking to Pugs
Also, I don't get how to connect to a specific server (in L4D) Where do I do that?
Finally, is ingame or vent used?

well if you have your own server and want to connect through a lobby the command is something like sv_search_key "your server key" and it will connect you to it.. Otherwise its just like any other game enable console in the options, and then copy and paste the connect xxx.xx.x.xx:27015; password **** and you will auto join.. it will ask you for the password again, but it is already in there so just hit ok.. Vent is used.. Ingame voice comm makes your player light up and is usually not a good thing to use..

I'd suggest joining a team, as the game is far more fun with a team of competent ppl.

I have friends I commonly play with, I just don't have a true "team"
Also, for all those #things, I don't get it. Do I use #l4d form the main menu?

once you get mirc up and online, type /join #l4d
that'll join you to the l4d channel. Same for the others.

You don't need the # in the /j l4d.
You connect to the server irc.gamesurge.net. It's listed in the server list or you can just type /server irc.gamesurge.net. Once it connects, type /j l4d, /j channelname. If people are looking for ringers, just double click on there name to message them.
