Before you get your fucking boxer briefs all shoved up your stained and stretch a-hole, read what I said: "No Serious LEAGUES"
Tourney != League. A League has recurring seasons and playoffs and builds a community of teams. We've had a collage of tourneys; some that have been alright and some that have failed miserably. CAL died before it even got the ball rolling. So yes, this community has yet to have a solid league to hold itself together.

Ok wow. I really missed the war last night. Damnit. I only got to catch a few post the were linked from last night. But man i wish i was there.
And as for the league. Lets give it a chance. One thing you must admit, is that for a game that hasnt had any "serious league" backing it, the community has somehow managed to stay togethor. What ever community we do have. It may only be 40 or so people posting, but thats usually only a few from each team, which then brings out that theres roughly 100+ active teams right now with no league support. Im excited to see where this takes off to once there is a secure league backing. (and we fluch the dead team sign ups out)

Cartire, just because people post here doesn't mean they really are taking L4D at all seriously. I could name at least 10 that are active posters on these forums that could give little care if there is a league or not, and they would never really travel beyond a few hour drive for a tournament. By the looks of CEVO and how the competitive community seemingly functions, it doesn't look all that bright for any type of pay-to-pay league or large organized LAN tournament event. I'd say CAL dying and Valve taking forever to release the SDK extremely hindered the game from ever pushing a high state of potential to take off.

while i dont think most people realize how big of a hit the gaming community took with CAL dying, there is a solid base in and around here and other communities that is still in the early stages of development and emerging. time will tell and this is a brand new game, community, i like cartire do agree and am excited to see where this goes once someone officially adopts this bastard child of a game into their lineup.
ps: i would love to see ESEA pick this up, which would be a huge help to the community. ESEA imho is the next "Big League" of gaming

This Summer really will be the defining 'make it or break it' point for the game imo. Typically some of the stronger game titles (for both pc and console) get released towards the end of the year, such as CoD 6 and how L4D was, and if this Summer doesn't provide some better stability to L4D, expect some of those titles to steal away a good chunk of the pubbing player base this game currently holds. ESEA definitely would give an exceptionally strong uplift in activity, but from those that I know within the organization, there's no current plans for L4D.

05-26-2009, 07:29 PM
Sean, I understand there is 10 people on here that don't take it seriously. Thats fine with me. I really don't take the game "seriously" either. Theres a scale. I like competing in the game cause i find the competition factor entertaining vs pub factor. If thats what serious means, this fine. There are some that play only to win. If theres the serious factor, then fine also. And then there are some that play devils advocate all the time waiting till the day that the game is officially dead so that they can jump and scream "I told you so"
And sean, I'm sorry that DOD is dead. But you don't have to constantly take it out on L4D. With a serious league backing, this game can do well. The CEVO tourney does have a lot of inactive teams that signed up, but so does every single game ever that started out. Just a lot of high hoper's that signed up and said fuck it. It was after a season or two and a few stable tourneys that these games were able to become concrete.
I'm not saying L4D will become the next CS, it wont. But what makes this game different is that small amount of random factor that keeps games suspenseful. We can all assume that Area 51 is gonna beat said team, and 99% of the time they will. But that random factor is what keeps the suspenseful nature of the game beating. And sometimes the underdog is gonna win, and it will be spectacular to watch.
I for one am looking forward to it. And I could really care less who goes to LANs or not. If they're in Vegas, I'm going even if I'm the only one signed up. ITS FUCKING VEGAS.

CEVO is definitely a seirous league, they do intro tourneys for new games then open up the league. as far as teams not having enough members, you can point that finger at the community that follows this game not being active. it has nothing to do with CEVO.
cevo is super
doesn't change the fact that cod4 still has more lans than l4d.

This game is far too simple to be interesting at high level play. It's only interesting now because teams are still learning and mastering the game. I'm not waiting around to say "I told you so" because it's inevitable.
But L4D is the first game to require players work together at all times, and better games will come along that expand on that idea.

Oh Cartire, most who know me know that I haven't cared about DoD no matter its status since a little after WSVG :p Oddly, as small as the community is, it's still going decently 'strong' though. It had a 7ish team LAN only a few days before Christmas in SoCAL this last year, and there's one in 2 weekends that currently has 12ish teams definitely attending. CEVO is also hosting another tournament or season for it as well.. don't ask me why. With all other arguments aside, it can't be refuted that DoD has had one of the most supportive communities of most other games.
My perspective simply comes from having a lengthy gaming career and having been a part of various communities to the point of being able to decently gauge how things are going. My definition of serious play over a game would consist of there being both strong online and LAN tournaments taking place, and there being a stable and supportive community backing both. We've seen CEVO have some inactivity already in its early stages, and you know things just get worse as seasons go on (as an ex-CAL admin you should know this trend). Furthermore, LAN tournaments are one of the key driving forces towards keeping a game competitively strong. Thus far, this community seems all too much like DoD:S with being smaller and loosely supportive. A game has to build up somewhere to acquire the status of CPL, WSVG, WCG, etc.. and while some people here do have such hopes, there isn't much of an indication that the community/game will ever reach that potential.
Well so far Cevo hasn't been much other than a shit load of teams having 3 members, no steam ids, and all giving forfeits... so so far I'll agree that there's nothing serious yet.
Sorry, a 1k prize pot, a working anti cheat, and the fact that you get customer support in a matter of minutes at peak hours typically, is what i define as a good league. Yeah, there are some teams with three members, and i think dan hit the nail on the head for that.
Before you get your fucking boxer briefs all shoved up your stained and stretch a-hole, read what I said: "No Serious LEAGUES"

My bad, see i call it events(and so does cevo) i don't really differentiate. But if you want to get technical on this, the opening "tourny" has 7 rounds of group play and then playoffs, hrm, that's remarkably close to the 8 rounds of play then playoffs that cevo normally does for their leagues.
Side note, I go with boxers, not boxer briefs.
i doubt there will be other fps's that require the amount of team work l4d requires. The reason for that is how when 2/4 infected hit you, you can't fight back. while in other games. css, cod, dod, tf2 and it becomes who has a better shot instead of which group of 4 survivors can skeet hunters and dodge common boom spots, and thwart quad caps.
