View Full Version : Infected Cup Scheduling suggestions

So one thing I've noticed with both the original infected cup and the RIP CAL tournament is that cramming it all into one weekend has had its downsides.

I feel like having teams play marathon sessions for 2 days in a row is very cumbersome and ultimately probably not the best way to schedule the event so I'd like to provide some suggestions on how to hopefully make it better for all parties involved.

With 32 teams single elimination the tournament will have 5 sets of games so what I propose is having it over a 3 week period. Two matches per weekend, then the finals on its own weekend. Also I think it would be best to have the same map played throughout the weekend so teams won't have to scrim and focus on two different maps per weekend making preparing a little easier.

Also I think it would be best on the first two weekends to have the matches on sat and sunday instead of both on the same day, to give teams some breathing time to regroup. It is after all an online tournament and not a lan tourny so extra time between games can be afforded since you don't need to get everything in one weekend like a lan event. In addition to this, it allows teams to negotiate match times that best fit their schedules. Obviously you would still need a default match time in case there are issues on both sides (sometime between 7-11est would be the best I think).

Also keep in mind the TWL tournament is starting the 15th and will run on sundays, so you might even want to make the Infected Cup a 5 week tournament having matches on saturdays only to accomodate teams playing in both tournaments.

The other advantage this provides is that it gives teams something to do in the hiatus between CAL being down and hopefully CEVO starting up as opposed to having everything done in a weekend. (Plus I can go out and drink and not have to worry about reporting matches when I get home at 2am drunk off my ass)

Anyways as always that is just my 2c.

honestly most teams are on during the week - I've always felt weeknights @ 9 work better. But I agree with ^^

Yeah, just speaking for my team and the amount of scrim ad's I see on the various l4d channels during the week, I don't think it would be too hard to just have it over the work week. One match a night, at like 9 PM EST shouldn't be a problem for most, but I can only speak for my team and obviously don't know everyone else's schedule.

I say have 2 matches on a weekday or 2 matches on sunday for 3 weeks. Having it on both days of the weekend is rough since people do have a life and want to get out.

if people can play over the weekend they are obviously not doing anything during the week.

Weekdays are better for sure.

Agreed. I like to occasionally go out and get shitfaced on my weekends.

I agree that it should not be crammed in over one weekend but it also should not be drawn out. I think two weekends is sufficient to knock out 5 rounds of play especially seeing how many rounds of play we managed to squeeze into this one weekend. Perhaps do 2rounds Saturday, 1sunday, then the one round the following Saturday and the finals on Sunday. This format also allows for better coverage of the event. Just my suggestion and I've been involved in numerous lan\online tournaments over the course of 8 years.

Lastly here is a copy of the bracket and how seeding should be done correctly.

Please no weekends unless it is 1 day a week...

I don't want to waste my entire damn weekend sitting on the pc playing matches.

It will be on weekdays, not the weekend.

Sweet, I thought that this was always going to be a weekend event. My team can sign up this time!

My team would absolutely be for playing Tuesday/Wednesday.

A quick note for seeding. I believe there is a better idea of who the better teams are. And they should be listed from 1st on down as to not elminate the better teams right off the bat due to 2 good teams facing off first round.

Obviously, not every team is known, and there might be better teams out there, but as of now, the known better teams should be listed in order as to keep them spread out. and not facing each other.

early that is

using railz seeding chart would be perfect too for 32 man

EDIT: on one more note. We should start this shit next week. The 32 teams will have definentlly signed up by then, and were gonna stretch this out a couple weeks, we should start it soon, cause there are more leagues on the horizon :)

i agree with what railz said...

there is nothing worse than having the good teams play each other early and have some nub teams make it all the way to the semi's

rank the good teams and separate them for at least 2 rounds

I agree, the teams should be seeded based off how good they are, I'd rather not see very good teams knocked out first round just cause they caught another very good team. Maybe seed the top 8-10 or so imo. There's enough room where you can seed the 7 teams from RIP CAL + one as #8 (probably paragon?) without them encountering each other until the quarter finals. Do seeds 9-16 with the more active mirc teams that don't make 1-8, and do the last 16 randomly.

Considering it'll be cal-switch (I assume?), seeding won't be a huge advantage.

I also think it'd be great to only do 2-3 rounds per week. 10 hours in 2 days REALLY works on you, and that's not counting scrims. I'd also like to see the tournament start once there's 36ish teams signed up. Just give a week's notice and go from there imo.

I really can't stand playing with madyak for more then say 3 hours so please don't make us cram again.

1. I will be personally seeding the teams. No one else will have a say in my decisions. Of course teams that have not competed in our events will get randomly assigned to higher seeds (higher as in the number is higher).

2. We will use a format like Railz presented but if we get 64 teams by Friday, it will be a 64 team tournament. This tournament, 32-team or 64-team, will take place on the weekdays voted upon by the community. It will take 3 weeks of 2 matches a week for the 64-team version or 2 weeks of 2 matches a week/1 week of 1 match for the 32-team version. Either way, we will be done in the first week of April.

3. It will be started next week.

imho the teams that have played in events here before (aka the teams from rip cal tourny, and MAYBE the teams from infected cup 1 but ierno) should be seeded. The rest after that should be randomized through random.org/lists. fairest way tbh.

Remember that next tuesday is St Pattys day. If you plan on holding the tourney next week, tuesday is probably a bad idea. Many people won't be on or drunk. Don't think people realize that when answering the poll. Just a heads up.

I agree with this, but also seed the common mirc teams too after that. Just do them in a group and randomly assign a seed out of that group (like say they're 8-16, it's random out of those seeds).
