View Full Version : Map Locations?

Sorry, I'm not sure if this is the right forum.
Anyhoo, I'm relatively new to the competitive scene, and I find that whenever I play pickups, the sheer number of names confuses me. I figured out pretty quickly what "mid" and "yard" and "house" were, but some things like "garage" took a bit longer. And sometimes, I have no idea what someone is talking about.
A couple years back, during the era of Halo 2, Overswarm made a couple of video map guides, like the one for lockout here: http://nikon.bungie.org/gameplay/stratguide/map_guides/lockout.html
The idea is a walkaround of the map to show strategic locations and area names, as well as why they're called that (for lockout, sniper tower because the sniper spawns there, green room because of the green color). I'm wondering if anything like this has been done for TF2? If so, where?

Good video, maybe just rehearse it a bit more next map.
Oh and by the way, on the way to the last cap, I call the bottom entrance to the cap "main", and I the second spawn "forward spawn" and the bridge next to that spawn "cat walk".
But I'm sure that's not important at all, and thanks again for making this video, I'm sure many people will find it useful.

let it riot - in return for your praise i will make another. it took like 15 minutes to make, produce, and upload. i'll do granary for real this time.

BAM! done with granary

took literally 10 minutes from the "record" button to the "done uploading" button.

Speaking of Granary, I think it's very inconvenient that you have two separate areas both named "Garage" in the same general vicinity, therefore I'm going to start calling the one nearest mid "Storage", at least with my team. Ideas? Input?

I found that bothersome too :|
I'll probably call it storage if I play in another game

My team's calls for Badlands. It's all from a RED perspective, although I switched left/right on the Yard picture.

Wow nice work man, we should get this linked on the gotfrag tips page.
If you don't want to, I'm sure some other people could complete the rest of the maps.

i do want to and i promise i will.
this is finals week for my university and since i graduate in may it is very important that i prepare myself. that the only reason i have not already completed all of the competitive maps, i assure you.
i have two finals tomorrow in the afternoon and evening and after that i am completely free. tuesday night is when i will finish, mark my words.
and then i will do the strategy series of videos.
edit -- i do not want this on the gotfrag forums. tell them to come here by word of mouth for all i care, but i do not want my stuff to be associated with that excuse of a community.

Well it wouldn't be on the forums it would be on the tips and tricks section of the site, where jaeger's stuff is.
Don't worry it's not like anyone would send the stuff to them without your permission.

Humm... since ctf_turbine and koth_viaduct are now being played, what about some love for them? I know they aren't cp_ but most people go into these maps with no bloody idea.
Thanks for all you've done :D
P.S: Don't overwork yourself, we'll still love you if we don't get new videos every hour

The only problem with koth_viaduct and the other maps is that most of us haven't had much play time on them, and so we don't have all of the terminology down.

i remember pubbing a lot of viaduct, because one of my regular servers would run it, but no one knows terminology for that map

Viaduct is small, so there's really not a lot to call on it. For the most part "left" or "right" work just fine. The best suggestion I can make is using "hill (ours theirs)" and "stairs (ours/theirs)" to describe red's left and right (or blu's right and left) respectively, so you can form strategies without being hindered by the fact that the map isn't symmetrical along the axis between the spawns. Aside from stairs, hill, and middle on either side, the only important calls I can think of are "rock" (by the point, common place for a combo to hold), "house" (the one building you can go inside) and "bridge" (between hill and house, common sniper spot).

There are so many small, precise spots on viaduct for scouts to jump around that I've found using directional calls is fairly ineffective. I'd recommend calling the small bridge (not the catwalk connecting the hill/pride rock to the house, but the house to the building) "pro spot," as snipers/medics can do a pro jump to get to it from house.

are there any competitive maps that i'm missing?
Grimm
12-12-2009, 05:18 PM
Hmm... no, the only maps you are missing would be a waste of time anyways, since they aren't played at all, really. It would be a much more valuable use of your time to get onto that strategy thing ;)

12-12-2009, 06:30 PM
awesome
which one do you want me to do first?
Let It Riot
12-12-2009, 07:24 PM
The only other maps would be cp_indulge and cp_gullywash, but I'm not sure how much they will be played this season.
But if you are going to do strategy, do gravel pit or yukon.

That's some pretty good discussion of gravelpit. One aspect I think that could help is having players demostrate the aspects as your telling people to get a better visualization.
AKA, the sentry discussion, have the SG out to show people the firing range and so forth, have the soliders in position etc..

12-17-2009, 02:48 PM
since i have volunteers, i guess i'm socially forced to do it. alright, no problem.
the way i've done the videos so far is have a brief list of things i want to talk about, however if i'm going to get people involved in it as well then i'll have to spend more time planning things out.
at most what "my bots" would be doing is basically imitating the people i talk about in the video, i.e. engineers who build sentries at the spots i talk about in the video before i start recording and basically dick around while i'm talking...
or if i don't talk about bots then they'd basically be soldiers/demos/medics/scouts who run around the various areas i tell them to before i record and while they're doing that i'm just talking.

Well, what you have now is pretty damn good for something made in an hour and a half, but it could definitely be more professional, which would take more time, but it would be a quality resource for people who want to know this stuff. And don't feel pressured into doing it, we're only offering ourselves in case you need people.
