I recently purchased a logitech g500 and became aware of my newfound ability to change dpi. Dpi for this mouse goes up to 5700 and I can have up to 5 different dpi settings available. Related to this, I was wondering what the optimum dpi setting is for tf2 (or any fps, really), and if there is one.

Currently, I've set three dpi levels: 2000, 3500, and 5000. I most frequently play on 3500 (which is what I've adjusted my in game sensitivity to), with 2000 available for sniping and 5000 available for, at this point, sidestabs.

I gewgl'd optimum mouse dpi but only got archaic CS threads, and found nothing in these forums either.

Thanks in advance.

Preference man. There is no way to assign a true 'best'. Just make sure to pay attention to where you're missing. If you're leading too much or shooting right behind a player during your twitches, it could be a simple sensitivity tweak that fixes it.

Doesn't really matter, you should stick to one sensitivity though.

depends on what your in game sensitivity is based on too, but its what 2thumbs said, its all personal preference.
TECHNICALLY, having a higher dpi is better because the laser reads more dots per inch(dpi) or some shit, but just play around with your settings and use something you like

EDIT: you might find this helpful, it calculates the # of inches in a 360 or whatnot http://www.gotfrag.com/tf2/forums/thread/422902/

Additionally, I have a 1920x1080 monitor and my sens is at .75. I dunno if this has any other impact, but after reading your posts, I feel I should inform you.

I swapped from the G5 to the G500 and my sensitivity went from 1.3 in-game to 0.455 because I like having the high DPI + low sensitivity combo. My 360 is in 6.3 inches with this. Oh and I play scout.

Test out that tool, it's great to figure out what's working for you.

My settings are
5700 DPI
0.455 In game sensitivity
6/11 Windows Sensitivity (default)
0.022 m_yah (untouched)

They were
2000 DPI
1.3 in game sensitivity and the rest as default.

hmmm, this is the first i've heard of the g500, might have to buy it. i am currently using the G9

my current settings are

3200 DPI
6.0 game sensitivity
9/11 windows sensitivity
0.022 m_yah (i guess, i have no idea what it is, so i assume its at default)

but im only mediocre at the game atm at least, i wouldnt recommend mimicking my settings...

G500 = G5 improved. I used the G9 for a while and I hated the shape of it.

yeah, the G9 isnt the best shaped mouse... but it was expensive, and there was none on display to see how it fit your hand before you bought it. and after spending like $100 for a gaming mouse, you learn to put up with the shape :p

the g500 is the same shape as the g5? i used to have a g5, pretty comfortable mouse... i might actually have it still.... i dont know, i tend to buy a lot of mice and then friends "borrow" them when they break their mice....

i do have a $50 giftcard to best buy from christmas that i still havent used. and there arent really any videogames that look particularly interesting... so i think i found something to use it on :p

Don't know if it's everywhere but the Bestbuy near my house had a deal for $50 for the G500 instead of its usual $60+. Oh and yes same shape as the G5, but it has a few more buttons and the 5700 DPI.

I bought my g500 for 50$. Probably one of the best mouses (mice? in relation to technology, that is) I've ever owned.

resolution doens't affect the sensitivty, its the aspect ratio/fov that affects it

i posted a question about this on gf, here you go:

Balla, thanks.

I actually remember reading that a while back.

Aspect ratio and fov don't affect sensitivity either... They all make it feel different but it stays the same.

wait, i thought that you couldn't set ingame sens less than 1.00?

You thought wrong. I know plenty of under 1.00 players.

sorry for the necro

in the overall scheme of things, how much does dpi matter?
(as in how well can you tell the difference between a 1600 dpi mouse and a 3000 dpi mouse if the degrees for a 360 are the same?)

dpi is just another aspect to change your sensitivity; the higher your DPI is, the more "detailed" you can get when messing around with your sensitivity - its personal preference

Also make sure your Windows sensitivity is at default.

Pretty much what Jeeka said, although a mouse with a higher DPI has the potential for stupidly high turnaround speeds. I think one day I'll try out my 5200 dpi Imperator on a high sensitivity just to see my jaw drop.

The only thing I don't like about having high DPI is casual work in mapping or artistry, in which case I'm trying to be exact generally. Having a mouse that flies across the screen isn't exactly the best for that, but that's where adjustable dpi comes in!

The high DPI allows for a more fluid movement, if you adjust your sensitivity accordingly it's just going to more accurately follow your movements. Like with mine I have 5700 DPI with 0.455 sensitivity. Gives me plenty of control to play scout. But it really boils down to player preference, also I'm gonna be swapping to this mouse soon :D

Actually contrary to popular belief the most accurate DPI is 400. Which is why in Professional CS and Quake many players use the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0.
