If you need something with a mic then Sennheiser's PC-XXX line is a great buy, I still use my PC161's for a mic (Grado SR225's for cans). If you just need a set of cans Grado SR80's can deliver some good sounds without the need for a headphone amp. There's a lot of decent cans out there in your budget range though, so I'd lurk around head-fi.org's forums for a while and see what kind of information you can pick up from them. But if you need a headset with a mic then your selection is a lot more limited.

It has the largest frequency response of any headset even beats my audiophile Sennheiser headphones, and there's a black version that comes with a 7.1 USB sound card, which if costs $40 but a great discount if you buy it at the package price. also I checked the reviews for the sound card and it is a pretty insane product. I'm definitely thinking of getting this one for Christmas. Hopefully it'll drop out of its $100 price by then.
