sup guys, i dont know how many of you go to teh steam fourms but i was there today just looking around (i usually dont go there) and i found a FPS 'fix'. I tired it and this did improve my FPS, An my rig isnt all that. This fix will only work if you have an anti virus running in teh background at all times. Here is a direct link http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1093560 or you can read teh bottom :smile:
credit to teh OP chrisCTX. Hope this helps someone... :biggrin:

This has worked for plenty of people in this thread so I suggest you read it completely, however be aware that your millage may vary, perhaps you will gain something perhaps not, but you will never lose

Everybody has experienced how FPS are going down the drain recently with TF2, however I believe I've found one of the sources (I'm pretty sure there many others) and found a way to fix it, so enough with the rambling I'm going straight to the point:

The folder:

Code:

C:\Program Files\Steam\appcache\stats

Contains a file called:
Code:

UserGameStats_####_#### (# = some numbers)

This file keeps records of god knows what about TF2, and it gets updated EXTREMELY frequently while playing.

The problem is that, most of us run high quality Anti-virus programs and they tend to scan all files that get updated in the system, and a lot of them tend to do so the instant it happens, clogging up the processor and making our FPSs die.

Apparently, having a multicore processor and fast hard drives (or a RAID 0 config) makes this even worse.

HOW TO FIX Video (credits to MafiaGuy7)

* Open up your Anti-virus program
* Go to the settings menu
* Select Exceptions/Exclusions
* Add the following folder to the scan exceptions

Code:

C:\Program Files\Steam\appcache\stats

Reboot if your Anti-virus needs to and enjoy a smooth game of TF2

How to fix, Visually (pictures are easy):

* Microsoft Security Essentials
* avast!
* avast! v5 (new GUI)
* Avira
* Nod32
* Trend Micro
* Bullguard Antivirus
* Norton
* AVG (scroll down)
* Bit Defender
* Kaspersky

NOTE: User who have performed this action have been reporting frame-rate gains or stability in other STEAM games, while it seems very plausible I have not tested it myself.

Go now! do it! (rep welcome :P)

For TF2 specifically this should reduce any hitches seen when achievements are earned.

Wasn't there an official tf2 update that fixed this?

Or was that a different file?

v3locity, that update you're referring to was to fix Steam Cloud updating itself to frequently and causing lag after a kill or death. This is something a little different.

I've implemented the change, but I haven't really noticed a difference, my FPS wasn't that much of a problem, though.

see my rig is about 2 1/2 years old so during big fights in pubs with more than 16 -20 players was almost unplayable. My fps used to drop to low teens even single digits, now i can go in to 30 slot servers that are full and in a big fire fight it will drop to low 20's high teens, so to me thats a nice improvment. It means i shouldnt have any problems in 6 vs 6 and 20 man pubs are a breeze now...
