Since im having trouble running BC2 im looking for a quick upgrade for my old ass PC.
Looking to just replace my ram, Gcards & maybe Harddrive for as cheap as possible.
Current cards. Sparkle Computer Nvidea Geforce SLIed 7800's 2x Overclocked (6 years old Over heats playing BC2, MW, & L4D without a standard house fan on the side of my tower.
Ram is 6 year old corsair 2x 512 sticks. at 8800 speed.
HD ~ 6 year old 512 seagate Barricuda
My motherboard is an Asus MSN sli deluxe and my processor is athlon 64 X2 Dual core processor 4600+, 2.41 GHz. I'm using 32 bit microsoft windows XP media center edition 2005.
My shits old yes i know but i dont have the money yet to completely upgrade and i just want a quick upgrade for the time being. help me work around for as cheap as possible while keeping it compatible with my MB/Processor/OS :bomb:
64 x2 duel best that i can get with my aged mobo fyi. Did the research my self. Probably gonna just grab x1 of these to replace my over heating 7800's, maybe OC this card.

Now it's just getting an idea of RAM/HD. Also, efficiency of upgradeing my OS with torrents to 64 bit so i can push past 3gigs of ram? or you think 2 gigs of ram alone will be sufficient for just an upgrade? The HD im looking to maybe get solid state, and just move it over to my new pc that i build.

Get 4gb ram and Windows 7 x64. 2gb is bare minimum today, and games like BC2 can eat up 1.5gb without blinking.
Don't get a solid-state drive if you're on a tight budget. It's better to have a high FPS than a short loading time. Giving windows 7 plenty of memory to play around with is a great upgrade, everything will be more responsive and you won't feel the need to upgrade your HDD as much.
Video card just get best for the price you want to spend. I'm selling my 4890 for $100 when I see a good price on a 5870 or 5970. Nvidia needs to release their joke cards so ATI can rofldrop prices.

ATI's HD 5770 1GB model is a pretty decent buy for a low budget (~$150). It performs on par with the previous generation's 4870, but you get DX11 support.
Jerkstore, I think the 5970 is a lost cause. nVidia doesn't have an answer so the cost is going to hover in the $700 range for quite some time. There are rumors that some 58x0 cards are going to come down in price a bit whenever Fermi actually materializes.

ATI is probably going to be the better buy for a new gpu for you, I don't know a whole lot about ATI cards at the moment (I have an nvidia 9800GTX+ and I'm not looking to ugprade anytime soon), so I'll leave someone more experienced with ATI to give you an idea on what cards would work well for you. My guess is the 4870 would be plenty, but I'm not sure.
4GB RAM with w7 x64 (if you can get it) would probably do you a lot of good for everything. If this (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=n82e16813131013) is your board, then I'd say look at:

I'm not experienced with your board so some time spent on figuring out if whatever memory you do choose works for your board is strongly recommended. I have the 1066 version of the Reapers and they've been extremely stable for a while now.
As for the HDD, I agree with Jerkstore in saying that solid-state probably isn't a good idea if you're going for a quick upgrade, especially not if you want something cheap. To be honest, unless you don't have enough space anymore or you think the drive might be failing *knock on wood*, I don't see much point in getting another hdd until you do your next full build. You probably won't notice any differences aside from available space by getting a new hdd, unless the one you currently have is completely ancient.

problem so far is i cant fucking find the timing on this ram listed above, anywhere. Also my ram speed was 800 not 8800. typo. I currently have 2x corsair xms 512 sticks in with 2 more slots, so those sticks above look perfect for the price. As for the OS, i don't have the money nor do i feel like ever purchasing an OS, unless im building a new PC. So unless i can find a 100% true torrent, then the only OS i'll "buy" is 64 bit XP or Win7. Picking between vista & i7 is like comparing a lovable Labrador retriever to an ugly ass poodle.
I'm pretty solid on the Card i listed above, 9800 will do me good and for 80$ and 3gigs of ram i should be fine (a total of 130$ for 2gigs of ram and 1x 9800).
XP can hold up to 4 gigs but the Gcard accounts into said limit so 3 gigs of ram and a 512 gcard will suffice. Since everything is getting near Death stage im just gonna OC my CPU to it's limits push every little bit i can left in this machine.
Anyway thanks for the quick help guys

"Over heats playing BC2, MW, & L4D without a standard house fan on the side of my tower." That means your case has shitty airflow and the heat generated by your cards isn't getting exhausted too well. I'd suggest using these if your cards work but are just overheating: http://www.amazon.com/Antec-Cyclone-Blower-Case-Expansion/dp/B000051299/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1270766279&sr=8-4
A 9800GT won't really get you THAT far.. it's kind of a shot in the foot for when you find you need a new video card in another half a year or so. The card is pretty much a 8800GT, which is pretty outdated.
With buying your ram from Best Buy, at least you can return it if it's not compatible with your current ram. Different types of ram can be pretty picky about working with each other, so cross your fingers.
You should definitely OC your CPU. That's probably where you'll find the most gain aside from getting more ram.

No..my case has plenty of air flow, the cards are just 6 years old. my NZXT tower has a custom side fan and various fans through-out the tower. I'm sure im fine.
the 9800 from a 7800 is a pretty huge jump. Regardless it is temporary as like i stated this is just a temp upgrade from what i have just to keep an extra foot in the door and not graphically freeze for 3 seconds to show up dead from a knifeing animation in bc2.
The ram should work it's not so much "manufacturer" as the timing speed & ddr. Even if they dont work i can take out my old 1gig stick and put the other 2 gig off brands of the same quality still a whole +1 more gig.

If it's a temp card that you need I'll sell you my 8800 GTS G92, a card that isn't really different from the 9800 GTX. It'll get me off the fence of getting the 5850.

9800gtx (better than the gt you were looking at) cards run for $120~ which is pretty equivalent to the 8800 G92. It's 2 years old, but EVGA & XFX both have reliable lifetime warranties. If this interests you, name a price you feel is reasonable.
Been running BC2 at medium-high graphics settings at 1680x1050 pretty smoothly, though my CPU runs at 3.7ghz.

Bought an EVGA 9800 GTX on sale for 80$ at best buy a few days ago. Thanks for the help guys, playing my games perfect on max settings. Problem now is, my computer loads things like shit since the HQ lol.
