I really hate to be the one to bring this up, I don't like being the dick, but I have to say I do have a bit of an issue with you referring to the Community TF2 Wiki as 'TF2 Wiki' I'm one of the admins at the TF2 Wiki, ie the http://tf2wiki.net which has been online for since October 2007. I'm not sure why you chose to refer to it as TF2 Wiki as any search on google would have confirmed that there was already one by that name. Could I get some feedback on the subject from the admins please, I just want to sort out the user confussion.

It's a wiki dedicated to competitive TF2. The Community Forums itself is dedicated to the competitive community and there is a wiki for each competitive game featured here. Since we have wikis for several games there was a need to distinguish them from one another, hence, TF2, L4D, etc. I'm not an admin but I hope that makes things a little more clear.

This.

"Competitive TF2 Wiki" was unwieldy to use across the board, although you can see it used here: http://wiki.commforums.com/doku.php

TF2 is a pretty general term - I assume there are multiple "Car Wiki" or "Boat Wiki" or "Saxaphone Wiki" sites across the web, and I don't think anyone questions their titles. In fact, I'd say that any wiki related to Team Fortress 2 could be referred to as a "TF2 Wiki" by default.

As far as Google results go we can't really help our SERP, but if you notice the description under our result is "This section of the wiki is focused on the three different dimensions of taking part in competitive TF2: getting started, playing competitively, ..."

Thanks for the response Hitman Smurf.

Re: "uhhh" - To be honest, both of those reasons are rubbish. I can fully understand that '"Competitive TF2 Wiki" was unwieldy' but that point just doesn't hold up when most other sections have been shortened, like the URL to commforums, the community fortress to 'CommFT', and even the flash advert for this wiki which displays 'commWiki'. Point two is just totally spurious - TF2 is an abbreviation of Team Fortress 2, not a 'general term' and to liken it to "Car Wiki", "Boat Wiki", or "Saxaphone Wiki" is like saying "I like Gorgonzolacake".
I was wanting to politely discuss if there was anything we agree on to help user experience but after that response, sod it. Nice tact there Ben, I'll expect this post to be removed, because it's not to your liking

Wait, so because we shorten section names, we can't shorten Competitive TF2 Wiki? I don't follow. If you look you'll see that we also have an L4D Wiki (http://wiki.commforums.com/doku.php?id=l4d:home), conveniently named in a similar pattern.

This doesn't make any sense. If you don't think TF2 is a 'general term' in the context of a TF2 forum, or a community based around competitive TF2, or a group of TF2 enthusiasts, I don't know what to tell you.

I'm going to leave the post because I think it's illustrative of some srs ridiculousness, and reflects poorly on your organization.

Bottom line, we refuse to concede that you have sole rights to the term "TF2 Wiki". If your users are confused, tell them to spend a minute reading our wiki and they'll be able to tell the difference.

What? I tried working that one out, it just didn't make any sense however I reconstructed it. It doesn't matter anyway because I won't be replying after this post.

and reflects poorly on your organization.
TF2 Wiki is not, and never has been an "organization". It strikes me as odd for someone who setup a community, to not know the difference between an organization and a community. Secondly, you don't think your original response may have been a poor representation of your Community?

Brilliant...You don't seem to have grasped that I was referring to the whole internet userbase, not our users. Our users and your users would obviously know the difference.
By "we refuse to concede" do you mean to say you've spoken to others and discussed it rationally, or that you got annoyed and personally reacted badly?
I never claimed that we "have the sole rights to the term", nor even suggested we have any 'right' to anything. I mearly requested feedback, which I got politely from one of your users. But when it came to the admins response I got an unhelpful, defensive retort which seemed to rationalize that a term (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/term) was the same thing as an abbreviation (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/abbreviation) and that you can liken a type (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/type) of something to an abbreviation of something else.

Leave the post, by all means, it's a good example of what happens when a naive admin believes someone is attacking his creative decisions.

Sounds like he came here expecting a fight, then got mad when he didn't get one.
Good thing bombsquad isnt 12

edit: on a side note, this at least means the wiki is getting more popular, if it's supposedly encroaching on the biggest tf2 wiki's userbase.
