I'm relatively new to the site, and I must say, that cycling image you have on the main page (the one that plugs TGBF, Apoplexy Industries and a few others) is extremely well made. I wish whoever made that could put out, like, some Photoshop tutorials.

That's all I really have to say.

Yea our graphics guy does all of the graphics that you find on the forums and the site. He goes by the screenname of midblue (you may see him post on occasion). He went to school with me and he's in design school at the moment. I'm sure he could offer some tips. I'll let him know he's got some fans.

Hahah thanks dude, I try.

I've never actually thought of doing tutorials before, just because my design process consists of educated guesses and the combination of simple pieces... the highlander one is the only one I went into with a plan.
But if there is a specific one you want to know how to make, I could definitely post it.

Mostly I'm fascinated by you've worked with negative space, and how you've managed to go for a rough/textured look without also getting an "ugly as shit" look, which is what I typically end up with. Could you maybe show how to get pull of that painted/splattered/dirty look sometime?

For the specific look I used for these, it really comes down to finding good textures (often more than 1 for each) and manipulating the blending options as well as modifying colors to unify the whole thing.
In regards to negative space, many of the blending options in photoshop will ignore solid whites or solid blacks, allowing those sections to remain untouched. It's just a matter of having a clean, simple design that can easily be textured-- if you try to texture a brick wall, it will look awful and overly busy, but if you texture a vector image, it adds a new dimension to your work.

Just like everything else, practice is the only way to get better at getting that certain look you want.
