Default CEVO Season 8 Maplist, Weapon Bans, and Other Changes

The map rotation for the season is as follows:

Preseason 1 - cp_petrol
Week 1 - cp_badlands
Week 2 - koth_pro_viaduct
Week 3 - ctf_atrophy_b4
Week 4 - cp_gravelpit
Week 5 - cp_granary
Week 6 - cp_gullywash_pro
Week 7 - cp_obscure_rc4
Week 8 - cp_freight

The weapon bans for the season are interesting. The community members decided almost unanimously that the weapon/item list be largely "vanilla"; all "stock" or "base" weapons such as the scattergun or the invisibility watch are allowed.

The list of unlocks that are allowed are as follows:
-Kritzkrieg
-Ubersaw
-Equalizer
-Gunboats
-Flare Gun
-Jarate
-All "reskins" are allowed (i.e. Iron Curtain, Frying Pan, Original, "Fish", etc.)

An important note is that unusual hats are allowed while "Strange" weapons are not allowed.

There have also been changes to the class limits:
2 Scout
2 Soldier
2 Pyro
1 Demoman
1 Heavy
1 Engineer
1 Medic
2 Sniper
2 Spy

Why on earth are Strange weapons not allowed? Are people really that annoyed by the thing that pops up when you get to a new level?
..What if there's no way your Strange weapon will get a new rank in a match? (Like needing 2000 kills before it hits that rank..)

Also, the Original is banned then, right? 'Cause it's not really a reskin. (Though Valve disagrees apparently)

The pro versions are what ESEA uses. They make the maps more playable.

Gullywash pro has no water which makes defending last easier.

Viaduct pro is less sniper friendly.

I think its the regular version of freight.

Atrophy should be a nice mixup since it is deathmatch CTF

Strange weapons give away spy weapons, which we decided was a disadvantage. It's easier to say no to them.

And yes, the Original is not a re-skin so it is banned.

Gullywash pro is gullywash imp3 (comp classic standard) minus the water, viaduct pro is a snow-less viaduct with a modified sniper catwalk (so snipers have a little less control over the entirety of mid).

I suggested different styles of map and showed the community ctf_atrophy and they liked it enough to select it.

It is cp_freight, NOT cp_freight_final1. Links for the maps will be up soon.

I can listen to reason on the Original, too. We neglected to cover it but wanted it as vanilla as North Americans would be able to accept.

No Crossbow? Blutsauger? Pain Train? Ambassador? Cloak and Dagger?

I want to see what arguments people made against these balanced weapons that add depth.

blutsauger is pointless to add in, as no one uses that and with good reason. this isn't ultiduo ;)

crossbow i agree with you, should be allowed as its definitely a downgrade

pain train straight upgrade (compared to bottle) so i *sorta* get that

spies should be backstabbing, not going face to face and headshottin. i dont think its banworthy, but it at least makes sense.

cloak and dagger is annoying and stupid as fuck. until they make it so it's 1 use of it until you hit a resupp locker then ban that shit.


edit: also want to add that cevo is for teams that aren't quite good enough/ready for esea, so keeping it mostly vanilla for teams new to competitive is really beneficial for them.

blutsauger is still used by some medics on certain maps (granary especially)

crossbow is not a 100% downgrade, again it depends on the map/situation

pain train is definitely not objectively an upgrade, that's highly debatable

if valve put a weapon in the game then clearly it reflects their opinion on what a class should or should not do. the whole point of giving the spy a gun like the ambassador is to a) enable him to get stealth headshots from odd angles people wouldn't expect, sort of like a weaker but harder to check sniper, and b) to help him escape from hairy situations with a lucky headshot. its not like it makes him, yknow, a good class

this is the first time I've ever heard anyone complain about the cloak and dagger, except on arena_lumberyard. it's not nearly as annoying as the dead ringer, and again it doesn't make the spy GOOD.

teams that aren't ready for esea should have more unlocks or the same, not fewer, as their roots are closer to pubs and therefore they enjoy/are used to more variety. this isn't cs where the pub game and comp game are exactly the same minus skill, they're completely different, and easing the transition is important

I'm just gonna take a guess here. When you inspect a player's inventory, a box on the lower right appears. So medics could quickly inspect a teammates items and see "This scout has a strange scattergun with a sappy line in the description, nothing odd here" or "His scattergun is normal, let me poke him with a ubersaw" because spys would disguise with a regular scattergun even if disguised as someone with a strange weapon.

Except there are no visual differences between a strange and a normal weapon.

If it "gives away" spy weapons, why not just ban strange weapons from the spy? People are going to be comm'ing about a spy that killed them, there's no need to ban strange weapons because of that.

Obscure has been shunned from the competitive community for a reason, while snakewater has been accepted by the TF2 scene here in North America as well as in Europe. Props on taking out yukon though.

I agree with mustardoverlord here (!). Because CEVO is geared towards players that don't have a lot of competitive experience, it makes much more sense to be lenient regarding unlocks. Seeing all these weapons banned may give them the wrong impression of competitive TF2, and I disagree with many of the weapon bans. We should not strive to stagnate the game further, but instead embrace the variety readily available to us.

"noone uses it" or "it's dumb" aren't good excuses. those are opinions. if there are no issues causing imbalance then it should be allowed.

gullywash and obscure, two old, stalemate-y, and generally terrible maps are in the rotation but not something newer like snakewater ?

People go around spychecking by inspecting what other people are using?

..I don't even have the inspect key binded (not a word?) to anything.

The thing you all need to remember is that the community decided these things. If you don't show up to the meeting where we decide the rules and changes and maps you can't blame me for changes that aren't what you wanted.

We have more-or-less decided that "The Original" should count as a re-skin, as well, for those of you who wanted to know (AKA, Original is allowed)

What was the initial problem with original? Its sound or accessibility? Because I thought the shooting from mid and shooting from side was argued with both having their advantage and their disadvantages
