Default How do you keep a team drama free?

So me and a buddy of mine run a 6v6 competitive team which formed a community around it. We've been together for several months now and its tough to keep everyone happy. Any thoughts and ideas to keep drama out of the community?

Lay down the law as soon as someone starts shit. Seriously I run a gaming community also, and sometimes its like dealing with children. When things get out of hand I shout and remind everyone that the mumble + community is a privilege and not a right. I rarely have problems.

In the team environment though, you have to be a bit more diplomatic about it.

There will always be some level of drama, the key is to have 6 people that can at least kiss and make up after a tiff. Like, even best freidns will fight form time to time, but if ti's a daily thing, you may have to ask the repeat offender to shape up or you're forced to ask them to leave.

A big thing is to never play the blame game. Remember that this is a team game and if the team shares in the victory, then the team also gets to share in defeat. Now, not everyone will be playing on the same level sometimes, and sometimes people wont be doing their job, but in those situations, your team leader has to pull them aside and tell them what's up. Never just say in mumble "DO your effin job *name*" or blame someone for a loss. This will stop a ton of team drama.

It really depends what your team's goals are. If everyone on your team is looking to improve and win, than there really shouldn't be any problem with "blah blah do your job." If you take that as team drama, you probably aren't going to make it that far, sometimes it is necessary to tell people they aren't doing their job. If one of my teammates says I'm doing something wrong, or I did something that led us to lose, I would do my best to improve upon that, not get defensive and consider it "drama". A good team needs to be able to be critical of each other, otherwise there is room to improve. If you really are teammates, you shouldn't get upset over somebody saying "you did this wrong." You should simply try to improve on it. However, sometimes people will blame others for no real reason at all, but there isn't much you can do about it.

If you guys are all in it to just play fun, then there shouldn't be an issue, because how can you have drama when having fun? Seems impossible.

Also, like kuza said, every team will have some type of drama. This just in, not everybody on the internet gets along.

"We need to..." rather than "I need you to..."
Do the "shit sandwich" (start with a complement, do a criticism, end with a complement)
Ask what their goals are in a situation rather than just tell them what you want (note: don't ask like an asshole).

It's impossible to be fully drama free. Try and get 20+ year old players who have some social skills. Avoid teenagers whenever possible.

Also, never at any point blame a loss on a single person for any reason.

The best thing you can do is to form a team with your FRIENDS...not 6 random people from Gotfrag. Just have pre-existing relationships within the team. Instead of you looking for a Scout, ask your first Scout if he has any in mind to partner with. Look for combos that have previous experience with eachother, find people you just love to play with, and that's the key to keeping drama to a minimum.

Ya I liked that part to. Because really there's maybe 1 or 2 teenagers who might be exceptions. I wouldn't test it though just keep them out.

Doesn't really matter what age people are. The most important thing is having the proper balance of hot headed people and level headed people. 1 hot head for every 6 people is a good ratio. :D

I think density hit it. Play with friends - not 6-7 random douchebags that you pieced together from GotFrag. Play with people, chat with them, and the key is to create a team off your friends list in my experience. It does several things - it helps team chemistry, it helps keep everyone level-headed, as it's a bit tougher raging at your friends than it is some random dudes, and it guarantees you a better shot at having a full roster going into next season as well. Trying to play with random people is like trying to climb up a ridiculous set of stairs.. sure, you'll get there eventually, but I'd rather just be the lazy fuck and take the elevator.

Bad analogies ftw!

I'd like to piggy back on Viper's comment. I've learned from past incidents that it behooves everyone involved to air grievances early on. You have to nip issues in the bud or it will grow to be an all consuming cancer within the team. Open and honest communication, imo, is crucial to team harmony. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go meditate on a lily pad.

Most of "problems" I've run into in TF2 were with people over 20. .-.

For me personally, I've had issues with people of all ages. I think it's pretty ignorant to say that teenagers as a whole are immature and should be avoided completely. TBH, I've had more issues pugging with people above the age of 21, as they are more egotistical and self-absorbed compared to many teenagers I've played with. I'm a teenager myself and I'm not trying to say teenagers arent the root of all evil in TF2, as there are a lot of retarded teens in this game, but as community there are retards among all ages, and it's pretty fucking retarded to label one age group as "bad" people to recruit for a team.

tl;dr SealClubber, you're fucking dumb.

When we recruit, we mention our median age because it is sometimes difficult for younger teens to 'get' us... We've worked with some teens that have surprised us all when they divulged their age.

Well, it does make sense to look for older players when your team is composed of people above a certain age, but to say you don't want teenagers specifically because they are all immature and stupid is a little extreme.

Damn. So us old fucks over 21 are all apparently egotistical assholes, and anyone with "teen" in their age are immature little bastards.

If you're 20 years old, SAVOR IT. Because everyone else in this community blows, if you believe stereotypes.

My team ranges from our young'n 15 year old Scout, to me, our 23 year old soldier. It isn't about age, it's about character. If you have the maturity to have fun in a videogame, and play with friends - then I don't give a shit how old you are. I never realized age was such a big problem.. the only reason why I would be weary of people younger than say, 16, are whether they are going to be able to make matchtimes or not. Short of that - I say who cares.

As someone that's underage (and yet somehow played on a team with an 18+ age limit), I can say that having an 18+ rule isn't a bad idea by any means. Most drama has come from when exceptions are made to the rule, and most exceptions to the rule have caused drama. I'm not saying that all <18-year-olds are bad news, just that there is a correlation between being younger and causing drama
