Default What do you think of the community?

I think the TF2 community is pretty nice. I mean, I may be wrong but everyone seems to be devoted to the game and wants it to succed.

I don't see as many FOX ONLY people as one would expect.

What do you think of the community?

What do you mean by FOX ONLY? The community is great, but there is always room for improvement, in North America we could always use more players and we need to be more welcoming of the new players.

NO ITEMS, FOX ONLY, FINAL DESTINATION!

That's the Super Smash Bros Melee community. Not very nice people, they are the kind of people who run at you screaming "Stop having fun!" and cripple their game by trolling newbies.

Maybe online, but I've gone to SSBM tournaments and the people there were pretty chill.

I think that nearly every competitive community suffers from having a negative image (like the one you just described) projected onto them. 99% of high-level SSBM players are content to play the game using the competitive format, and generally don't care how a bunch of elementary-school age kids play the game. However, on the internet, you don't see much of this silent majority; all you ever see is the few trolls on Gamefaqs who insist that the competitive format is the best and anyone who uses low-tier characters is dumb. Replace "SSBM" with "TF2" and "Gamefaqs" with "SPUF" in the last couple sentences and you have a pretty good picture of how a lot of people perceive competitive players.

That being said, I think competitive play at this point has gained enough inertia (see the popularity of TF2lobby and the large participation in ETF2L) that most people are able to see the community for what it really is past the stereotypes.

Gotfrag isn't helping things any, though.

Gotfrag is just a big circlejerk of all the TF2 trolls. Oh and on the SPUF we're a mythical creature that hates fun. Honestly the community is great, I just think there's a few areas we could improve on (we meaning the North American community.) There is no where near the success here that ETF2L has managed, they have something like 350 teams while between ESEA and TWL (I'd include CEVO but there isn't a season going on right now) we have something like 100 - 120 teams and a lot of them disintegrate before the season is even in full swing.

Depends on the circle and how "competitive" they are. Keep into account that they are a bit like TFC players in a regard. But yes, they are mostly inflated on the internet in real life they are not so bad. I didn't know about the gamefaqs SSBM community but Smashboards is pretty much filled with hate. The community is a broken war between SSBM and SSBB and that's not nice.

The reason SPUF is that way is because there are no moderators around. It's a troll forum, comp players are easy to troll so we get trolled. It doesn't matter what the content is.

Curiously enough, all the sites I come across are American sites. Perhaps it's the language? You Americans seem to try to get the game going, and I admire that.

I went to the GXL New Jersey LAN last October and got to know damn near every TF2 player who was there. Now I know, people do act different in person and etc, but I got a pretty good response outta alotta people, met tons of cool bros and etc. People from VinnyDaBoss to Technasty, Carnage and myself pointed out how we should be thankful that the TF2 community is pretty docile.
Compared to communities like HoN, CSS and etc, TF2 does have a docile competitive community for the most part. There is no such thing as a perfect community for starters.
Also, the competitive community gets a lot of non needed flak to due to the nature of TF2. The game is made to where you can be bad, not learn alot, and get away with it with some fun and random BS times. Other games such as CSS(not counting mods) and Quake for instance, basically either force you to get better or get fucking raped all the time.

TL;DR TF2 has a docile community. Some of the most chill people I met love to get rowdy and talk a lot when they play games online, some of em are just brats behind computers, and there are plenty of decent people around here. Also some of them will even talk to you when you are stranded in an airport because you are an idiot.

A note on GotFrag: Some of you dorks have your own circle jerk going on bashing shit you have little knowledge of. I am not heavily defending, as the GotFrag TF2 forums are pretty ridiculous meta-humor 75% of the time and can be pretty annoying and pointless. However, there are good reasons why useful stuff gets posted on GotFrag instead of here.

The TF2 community is great, although many forum communities that are old have a risk of being overrun by trolls or lack of management. Can't be worse than DotA.

TF2 is the best community that I've ever seen, because it discourages single-player carrying (like CS, CoD, and any 1-shot-1-kill game), without one player being able to ruin the entire game for everyone because they started out poorly (like Dota or any MOBA).

I think the cartoony nature of the game has a lot to do with it as well. The very fact that you just got hit with a flying jar of piss and are now being repeatedly juggled by a pyro that doesn't really seem to want to kill you can be rather amusing. (also, it's fun to watch people taunt when they know they have no chance)

I think that's because it's because the players are growing faster than the community. Sponsors and leagues need to step it up in TF2. ESEA is looking better, CEVO is okay. There are plenty of leagues and public gather groups for lower players. But if you want to grow stronger, it's either get good fast and win leagues, or stay back. There is little support for mid level teams. TWL Div 2 is very varied and Div1 is stagnant and pretty much dead, there really are not any mid pick-ups, ESEA is nice and all but the costs and high competition puts many teams out of it. More higher level leagues and groups need to give people a reason to stay and get better, especially when most of the time it's not about money (lol CS). I'd really like TF2 to be included in more lans around the world as well.

Missed ya at the GXL wand, see you in SoCal?
I guess the argument is drive from Cali to east side PA then drive from one end of population to the other in Australia.
Also more sponsors and etc please B]

If only got frag stays down forever, it would be even better. Been down for a day, let's just hope it got struck with lightning and they don't have a back-up box.

I like the community. Generally.

I experience a ton of hate because I refuse to play a general class and thus people yell at me and mock me and stuff D:

But I generally don't get much.

If they were worried about off classing, set the lobby to No utilities, if utilities are in the config options, might as well use them.

I don't know, why would do a lobby pug if you don't play any of the comp classes? I'm fine with people playing utilities (I went engie on mid in a lobby pug yesterday) but seriously if you're going to play a utility the entire game why don't you just play in a pub? It's kind of annoying sometimes when your team has a full time spy or pyro or whatever...

why not have a full time pyro?

if two pyros are better than two scouts, then why don't people do it -_-

I play pyro in comp only because I enjoy pyroing against the competitive scene. The players are skilled, the challenges are tremendous, and best of all, there's a nice projectile ratio to hitscan ratio while keeping the player count low.

Pubbing as pyro IMO is boring as hell, and it just doesn't challenge. I enjoy how it is in the competitive scene. Much more than any of the other classes.
