Hi, I would just like to post a few methods that I know of that you can use to practice TF2 on a Competitive Level. (Competitive Being 6v6 with 1 Medic, 1 Demo, 2 Scouts, 2 Soldiers)
If your completely new to CompTF2 than I HIGHLY recommend that you start off by practicing in a few well known public servers that are designed around CompetitiveTF2 play.
There are two ways to join a PUG.
Once CompetitiveTF2 no longer feels like a new concept to you. You should try to join a team that matches your skill level. Whether it be Low/Mid/High you can find a team that matches your skills at the CommunityFortress Recruitment forums. One last tip is that you should ALWAYS play to HAVE FUN. IF you play for FUN you will become a great player trust me. ![]() ~UPDATE~ Chance's Quake Bible is a text resource that is hard to explain but at the same time game changing. A must read for any aspiring competitive gamer. Getting out Death Matched to much for your liking? Practice on a DM server.
(Please comment below if I have missed anything or if you would like to see something added.) EDIT: Thank You Defiancd for pointing out that PUG's use Mumble. EDIT: Thank You Jeeka for noting that there is only ONE Pro Like Chro. EDIT: Thank You Grimm for providing the link to Chance's Quake Bible. Last edited by 13375p34k3r; 04-25-2010 at 06:17 PM. |

Yeah, #tf2.pug.na is a channel for more well known/experienced players.

keep in mind that when you play PLC, it's still a pub. It's a pub with league players, but its still a pub. Trying to carry pub tactics into a pug setting will usually get you screwed over (I know because I got solidly wiped on my first two pugs).

and interestingly, the same works in reverse. trying to employ competitive tactics in a pub can sometimes be a bad idea.

I agree that the tactics you'd employ on PLC are vastly different from those that you'd use in a PUG. However the general concept of CompetitiveTF2 is still present.

PLC is a great way for players to learn to not relay on their crits, if you see a few players from a single clan name you recognize on there it a good thing to hop in and watch what they do..

I would say before you do any of this read some of the guides to competitive play.
http://www.ubercharged.net/how-to-pl...ive-tf2-guide/ is a decent one, and there are plenty of others. These won't make you pro or anything, but they will go over the basic ideas behind 6v6, and the general idea of how you play a class and your responsibilities. OP I don't know if you have done a tf2.pug/tf2.pug.na or not, but they do not use vent. They use mumble, which you can download here: http://mumble.sourceforge.net/. |

I didn't include the textual guides on CompetitiveTF2 because I honestly don't find them that informative or helpful beyond common sense. Also could someone please clear up whether or not there are really two Pro Like Chro's? Last edited by 13375p34k3r; 02-21-2010 at 09:15 PM. |

The Wiki is a good place to learn about competitive TF2.

that's because the pro like chro server is a place for those people to just have fun. its their equivalent of pubstomping, so to make it interesting for themselves they off-class and just screw around.

It's what I do, I go there and dick around as pyro or spy. No point in putting on my serious face in a pub.

Is having a low mouse sensitivity as a scout really important? i started a couple weeks ago trying to get pretty good at scout, but i use an ingame mouse sensitivity of 6.0 at 3200 dpi, the ubercharged article writer says he uses 0.7 at 3200 dpi.... i have a hard time imagining anyone competitively using such a low sensitivity let alone it being advantageous... if its important and something im going to eventually have to do, i guess its better to work on lowering sensitivity now then later though...

Personal preference, it's all it is. You do what you feel can give you the best chance to make the shots you need to make.

Excerpted from Chance's Quake Bible, which by the way is a great resource for getting better competitively (although it's for Quake, it still applies to TF2)...

I preach Chance's quake bible. Go read it and read it good, actually read it and soak it in. Then when you start to get better, go read it again.

I agree with the above post and it has certainly helped me towards reaching my goal to becoming an invite heavy weapons guy player.

I read it for the first time last night, and it put some of the notions I had already conceived into a text form as well as vastly expanding upon them.
It's amazing.

I took a nice long read at Chance's Quake Bible and I believe that it provided far more insight than either the GotFrag or Ubercharged.net articles on CompetitiveTF2. Therefore I will be adding that particular resource to my thread. Thank you all for your support and keep the suggestions coming. I will do my best to update this thread religiously. I am also searching for more public servers that have a competitive focus.

i gotta say that until this thread i had never heard of this 'quake bible', but after reading through it and getting to the third page i've decided that it is the best (and by that i mean most abstractly written) guide to behaving like a professional that i've ever seen/read before.

Do SOAP DM Servers have a place in this thread? Or do DM servers contribute nothing to the overall experience of CompetitiveTf2?

DM servers are going to help you in the battles for mid that devolve into out fragging one another, it'll also help with aim and avoiding damage, basically it's just a nice way to practice your individual skill.

This looks like the right thread to ask about TF2Lobby. I'm running our very first team in CEVO-A Season 5. Preseason has been gravy. LOL
I'm all over these CommFT resources and am grateful. I'm interested in a little more explanation of TF2lobby.com Everyone has their accounts and have logged in to it correctly. I've created a lobby and specified our own server, w/ password, etc. We were doing 6v6, but only had 5v5 at the time. Everyone was marked ready...I hit transfer and it just kept blinking. I wasn't sure if everyone needed their TF2 game up or not, like if it gets auto launched. (yes im familiar w/ the analogy to l4d lobby) I'd like to ask for an How To for like the following scenario(s), if someone was so kind with their experience: 1. Generally entering a Lobby, you pick what is available? 2. You join an Open Lobby, therefore go to whatever server is determined. 3. Using Private Server Option a. login tf2lobby.com b. start tf2? c. Create/Join Lobby? d. e. Thanks in advance. |
