I've gotten significantly better at juggling, movement, prediction and airshots with ammo mod, but I really don't think it has been that useful for making me a better player in games. In combo vs combo duels, soldiers generally have too much HP to kill with 4 rockets unless they are just standing still. Against roamers, either they have a height advantage which isn't really practiced in ammo mod, or they are suiciding on my medic, which is very different than an ammo mod round. Same with scouts. Probably the most practicle skillset I picked up is how to kill demos quickly.

Down with Ammomod, SOAP DM FTW! I guess since no one has any good pub server IP's i'll spend all my time in SOAP DM... The only thing that sucks is the no sniper restriction... but thats for the better anyway. Wouldn't want to be body shot in the middle of 1vs1 would you now?

my "educated" opinion

Ammomod
Pros:
Easy to pick up on nuances of movement, work on dodgin
Best place to practice airshots/juggling

Cons:
Easy temptation to spam w/out aiming
Spamming +jump wins you matches, but is a terrible thing to do in a real game
Easy to rage


SOAP mod:
Pros:
Teaches awareness/target priority
Builds familiarity with key fighting points on map
Exposes players to strengths/weaknesses of different classes in different locations

Cons:
Easily rage-inducing
Temptation to gang targets with your team
If teams are numerically unbalanced, everything falls apart

any help there? if you want to practice, say, making every rocket count, go for ammomod. if you wanted to practice fluid scout jumps around a mid point while fighting, go for DM mod, etc etc

In ammomod (as a demo) I only fire shots I know (or think) will hit. In DM, I try to kill :p not to good at it.

If you're going to be playing ammomod use it to develop aim, air strafing, anti direct movement/rocket riding. If you're going to play soapdm, use it to improve your awareness/aim/movement etc. one thing i strongly dislike about soapdm, is some player (say on yukon) will go to the highest point on the map, and just spam rockets until people jump up, in order to airshot them. now the point of dm should be to roam around and put yourself into awkward situations, allowing you to improve when those situations arrive in a match. not to spam 20 damage splash onto 2 scouts while theyre trying to fight :)

My opinionated opinion:

Ammomod - doesn't make you aim better. only use is to warm up your aim. IMO is totally useless and overrated. you should play ammomod to play ammomod

Soap DM - good to get practice DMing. can make you better with things like movement and stuff.

Scrimming/pugging - there's no replacement for playing the game normally. you can't get the same situations in a DM server. if you want to get better, scrim and pug.

A really big misconception in my opinion is that by playing in a DM server or ammomod your aim will get better. Your peak aim will always be the same. A DM server can help you with movement and things like that, but your aim itself won't magically get better by you spending an hour daily shooting people. The main use for these kinds of servers is to WARM UP.

I think that really depends on your starting point. I haven't played TF2 for over a month and just started playing again 2 days ago. I jumped in some DM servers, and for the first 3-4 hours I was terrible. I was getting better progressively though, and now I'd say my aim is as good or better than it was before. More importantly, I feel like I'm a lot more aware of my surroundings than I was before. Of course the real question is whether that will carry over into real games. I'll post how it went when I get in some scrims.
