Default New to TF2

So, I just started playing TF2 a couple days ago, and i was wondering what would be the quickest route to getting better. I tried out all the classes and decided to main soldier. From here I have no idea where to go. lol I'm pretty new to PC Gaming in general (Used to be a 360 gamer), and I was wondering should I just pub, or is there a quicker way to acclimated to the competitive scene. From what I've seen, I'd like to be able to play in TWL( hopefully next summer). Any tips are appreciated cause I'm a nub..

If you are just starting out, you'll want to get familiar with the maps. Wand a while back did a series of videos on the map Vocabulary. The strats vids are a bit outdated since the game changed a bit with the newer weapon releases from valve. On Youtube search for TF2 Vocabulary and they will come up (they are buried in the CommFt Youtube channel.

Step two would be to play on some MGE Mod servers, CommFt has one, the AG Community has another. This will pit you 1v1 against another player and the main stress is getting your crosshair where you need it to be to get the kill. If you played the quake series, it's quite similar to the old Rocket Arena mod's that crt put out.

After that, you can find a Mentor, add a few up on your friends list to simply ask questions of and get some input here and there. Fell free to add me on Steam if you wish, I can answer a few things for you. (Steam Icon on the left I think can add a friend off of it. if not let me know).

And the next season of play begins in January, so if you are not yet on a team competing, make sure you watch some of the matches or grab a few from last season also. They are a good thing to watch to see how the classes put it together.

Hawkeye pretty much hit the nail on the head. The most important factor *if you haven't really been a PC gamer* is to get into regular DM practice. The more you DM, the more you'll get used to the skills required to play the game and all PC games in general. Some things you won't be able learn from MGE or DM, such as rollouts, teamwork, etc. You'll be able to pick these up over time via a mentor/practice.

Also, if you don't have a headset I'd recommend you get one. It's essential if you plan to play competitively in any nature.

If you need any further information, or could use any advice, feel free to add me on steam. http://steamcommunity.com/id/drumbum100

Good to see a new face in the community.

eventually you'll wanna start pugging so you can practice against players a bit better than the average pub player, but you could also pick up some bad habits doing that so watch out

Also - hit up tf2lobby.com and join some games. Play medic at first so you (a) get the hang of stuff in a vaguely comp-oriented atmosphere and (b) you don't have to wait so long for games. :)

^^ What he said..

But honestly, if your just starting with the game, I would not hit up lobby since it can really lead you to a different impression then how things really are. Find a mentor that can let you sit in on the comms/SpecTV of a scrim or two or even ring once they feel your up to it would be much more beneficial. Lobbies are fun but they really don't teach you 6v6 TF2 all that much.

Also, I've tried getting into CS:S, and it's hard because there's no one really there for new players, it's hard to get in if you aren't known.

Some places for TF2 Stuff:
http://tf2lobby.com/ - Will get you used to competitive format, even though lobbies are a joke.
http://commforums.com/tf2-mentors-f93.html - Mentoring forum, go get a mentor, it will REALLY help you out. But you have to go out and get one, add/contact the mentor, don't wait for them to contact you.
http://www.ubercharged.net/how-to-pl...ive-tf2-guide/ - Ubercharged has a great competitive guide for newer players.

Also, buy a headset, good mouse, and good mousepad. Not saying this is all 100% necessary, but there isn't a single well known mid level gamer or better that doesn't use gear like this.

I guess for being around Low/Middish I could help you out with a few new things about the game.

Also, avoid GotFrag.

Gotfrag might be full of trolls but it's still the most visited/active NA tf2 forum out there. After you get some practice if you want to let people know you're looking for a team gotfrag is the place to go. It's not like it's hard to ignore the completely off topic threads, there are some good discussions that go on there.

Well its been a little over a week now, and I'd like to give a shoutout to density for dealing with all my nubby questions XD. But since I'm on my laptop right now, I was wondering when rocket jumping do you first jump then press crouch and then fire or crouch, jump, and then fire. Because I've watched a couple videos on rocket jumping and I have yet to find a definite answer.

Jump -> Crouch is always the order of things there, you cannot jump when crouched since no animator could make a frog hop look cool in the history of gaming.

The firing is variable depending on the jump itself. On my config for soldier and demoman, I have my space bar bound to an alias that is always crouch jumping for me, and I handle the shooting.

Key is to be in the air and crouched when the explosion happens.

Either way works but I feel like crouch-->jump works better

Basically you want to tap the crouch button then hold the jump button and shoot the ground right after you hit jump. After you're off the ground let go of jump and hold crouch. You can practice this by facing backwards the entire time. When you get better you can face forward and flick backwards. The vertical angle you fire backwards controls how high you go.

That yields a higher jump when done properly, but is a little trickier to learn also..

Another quick question, I was wondering was the time difference would be between a soldier who rocket jumped all the way to mid vs a soldier that did two rocket jumps and then ran with the equalizer. And I was wondering what the typical pocket soldier's rollout to mid would look like.(would he advance with his medic or just try to get to mid as quick as possible)
Btw I decided that I'm going to try and play as a pocket soldier. So if you guys have any tips for that position they'd be greatly appreciated.

Most of the time, I see the pocket jumping to get to mid as quickly as possible, and the roamer do the 2 jumps out of spawn + equalizer. Regarding "would he advance with his medic or just try to get to mid as quick as possible", I guess it would depend on the map, but for the most part the whole point of a mid fight is to get as much presence there as quickly as possible. I can't remember seeing a map where the Soldiers can jump faster than the Medic can run without giving up more health than he should, so you're mostly going for speed anyways.

Oh, as for your first question. If one soldier jumps, the other equalizes, normally the equalizing soldier will get there a bit quicker than the jumper. At that point, they need to either stay in place or get rid of the equalizer a bit earlier so the combo can catch up. He can then get a full buff quickly with the crit heals.

For someone really new to the game, there are generally several ways to get to mid on any given map at roughly the same time (no one's jumps are PERFECT until they've played for a little while). As long as everyone on the team is on the same page, just do whatever is easiest for you and your team. Just don't have both soldiers try to equalizer run to mid, or have the roamer doing some crazy gunboat jumps while the pocket runs so the med has no one to heal.

There is a wealth of knowledge out there. If I were starting off playing solly, I'd take a look over Jaeger's tips and tricks:

Mostly the huge amount of people who feel the need to make alternate accounts and make sad attempts at trolling.

If you can get past that and just ignore them, it's actually quite decent.
