I've been playing alot of MGE lately and I was wondering if alot of new players play really inconsistently in mges. The only reason I'm asking is because I've never really played 1v1's in any game before. And I feel like my dm is improving but there are stretches of games where I'll just play really sloppy(usually after I've been playing for about an hour). Also my second question is if solely playing mge for practice is an effective way to get better? And if anyone can recommend places where I could go to pug because I've been hearing mixed things about tf2 lobby.
Thanks

Ringing for a team is a good idea, and working with a mentor is by far the easiest way.

If you have your rollouts down, you might get to sit in, but the mentor approach is the easiest way to get involved.

I'd disagree with 'good at ammomod, good at soldier.' Back when ammomod was active, there was a core group of players that played ammomod almost exclusively and who became really good at it.

A lot of those players were asked to tryout with teams and didn't have nearly the same DM in-game and were just in general not very good. One of them was even tried out by an Invite team, as I guess said team believed your statement, and that didn't work out well.

Then of course there were some who actually did become good soldiers, such as TicTack, WW and Jaegar.

Couldn't disagree more. Being good at ammomod only means you are good at ammomod. Not saying playing in ammomod is a bad thing, but there are other things you need to focus on. Also DM/MGEmod > ammomod.

Just wanted to say I agree with Kermit and Defiance.. Ammomod is a subset of DM skill, DM is important in match play, but there are other factors that are more important in my opinion that ammomod simply will not teach you.

Yeah, you've got to have a lot of mental patience to spam eachother on crates for 20 lives.

Lots of good responses in here, particularly Haweye's and defiance's, but I'll add to it by saying that I believe there are combination of things that can quickly and substantially improve your skill. Here, in short, is the combination I've been using that has bumped me up several notches in a span of months:

1. Warm up on training maps (rocketshooting and airshot, if you main Soldier)--20 minutes should do it
2. DM on MGE 1v1
3. Pub play (pick good servers with skilled communities)--pub play is often dismissed, but the sheer chaos and unpredictability of pub play goes a long way in teaching meta-game and building chops
4. Use TF2 lobby to practice in a competitive environment

After that, make connections with good players in the community. I wouldn't be where I am if not for people like dubel, Trewse, phase, Dunceiam, Snob, and Atlas. Finally, get in with a good community that values competitive and/or serious play. My group, MFU, has a pub server with no crits/dmg spread--it simulates a competitive environment while allowing for pub class selections and 10v10 teams.

I've got a future Screaming Eagles article on this very thing coming up in the next few weeks. Hope this condensed version helps.

One hour spent in tr_walkway_rc really helped me with both my soldier and my sniper. It was a bit of a grind and it hasn't turned me into a beast soldier or anything but combined with a little lobby time and some MGE i'm now able to land air shots fairly reliably and my prediction is much improved.
