Steam Public Beta
http://store.steampowered.com/news/3501/
Who's tried it? Lots of cool new features but I couldn't really stand it because the entire UI was incredibly laggy for me. Every action had a terrible delay. Pages loaded very slowly, one object at a time. Scrolling is very choppy. Had to switch back after about 5 minutes.
Imagine Steam's current web browser while in-game. Triple the amount of lag/delay you get with that and apply it to everything. That's how the beta performed for me.

I actually have had no issues.
It has been really quick for me.

Video of me using it / showing off the massiveness of my games list:

Funny you mention Steam's web browser, I guess you haven't tried the new one in-game yet. The beta has Webkit integrated as the browser (what Chrome+Safari use for rendering pages). Before it just used whatever the latest IE you had installed. Much faster in-game and out.
It's also a first release BETA, so any complaints are better off given as feedback.

Complaints? I was just describing my experience. I'll give feedback when I can actually try out the features properly. From what I could see the new features are great.
I'm aware of the new rendering engine... I opened store and news pages and they were just as laggy. How much memory is your beta client using? Mine was sitting at something like 120MB which seems high.
Looks like a lot of other people are experiencing the same thing:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=1157514
I'm not sure I liked the new menu button layout. Looks like a Zune or something. I also couldn't find the Steam settings menu, which made reverting back to the old UI a bit more difficult.

don't get so defensive baby, not everything I say is an insult. Was just pointing out if the beta's giving you lemons, report the lemons to Valve and wait patiently for lemonade. Or say fuck the lemons, and bail.
Performance is at the top of any beta to-do list, no worries there.
Zune software is lovely, so I was happy to see the similarities. I assume with 99% certainty that the new client will be even more customizable than the old. So if you don't like the layout, expect to see completely different skins, or just conversions of the new client to the old look.
If this were the final version and forced upon everyone, I would bitch about a lot of little things. But it's optional, they're going in the right direction and the little things will be hammered out, so it's no concern.

yeah it looks fucking AMAZING, but it is very buggy at the moment... havent had any issues myself ans yeah it does remind me of zune software, and that shit was 50 times better than trashtunes which i use now
it did take me a while to get used to where the fuck everything was though ahahhaah
edit: jerkstore points out that the new client should be more customizable and i cant wait for that - the old steam skins were all essentially the same thing, except with different colours

I love it except for the memory leak in there new web browser. Crashes overlay and have to restart the game to fix it as of yet.

I love how you can sort games by category now, great feature.
But why does my overlay stop working after 30 mins?

Interface is so 'bubbly'... not sure if I like it quite yet (biding my time to see if there are any flat skins that come out later down the road). But overall a graphical and functional overhaul is something Steam has needed for an extremely long time, happy to see it finally happening.

Okay there, Scotty Nguyen
I tried the overlay and the new browser is damn fast. If Valve adds tabbed browsing that thing'll be sex.

I'm not a fan of the gradients EVERYWHERE and the big blocks of pointless space, especially on the chat windows, but overall it's very nice, and the new features rock.

Make a L4D skin. Steam v1.0 had a kickass L4D skin, I miss it already. :(

Well, even if I don't open the browser the overlay stops working after about 30 minutes. :(

In L4D it crashed after map change, at least that's been my experience.

I didn't dig the new UI much, I went back last night. It just seems like it's trying to hard with the textures and gradients and losing functionality even compared to the old UI.

Think he's saying it's losing some functionality from the old one as in they don't function well... as if it sucks :P
Nah, I like it, but it keeps taking the text out of the overlay when I'm playing L4D so I'm switching back until it is proper :D

My favorite feature is the ability to play games in the future.

Haha, that one is easy to duplicate. Change the calender one day forward, launch the game, change it back. I fucked with some friends that way, too. I think it might be fixed now.

I didn't do anything special, that was just steam acting on its own accord.

Same thing happened to me. Didn't change anything, and yet I had last played BC2 Tomorrow.
Lol
