i bet you think you're smart.

edit - and its kind of ironic that you weren't aware of the starcraft thing considering that your profile picture comes from the starcraft thing

It depends. If you consider that sports require physical skills then not. If you don't consider it then yes.

BTW, The Olympic comitee considers Chess a sport and it doesn't require any physical skills.

You must think you are smart.

You haven't heard of a rhetorical question have you. I know how big starcraft is in South Korea, and how big it is in other parts of the world, you don't even have to play starcraft/enjoy it to know that. I just wanted to see the response, because the entire country doesn't play it, the game (SC1) has only sold 11 million copies or so, that's worldwide. So saying the whole country plays it, is a little dramatic. The game is huge, and the prize money is pretty big too, but it isn't like sc is the only thing the country does.

I love when people call others ignorant, and then use the line "you must think you are smart" assuming people are just stupid.

Not at all, your changing a video game into a e-sport.

Sure I'm an ass... I don't care. Either way there is absolutely nothing wrong with calling video game a video game, whether people who play starcraft think so or not.

furthermore, i heard on kritzkast with schetter and carr last night that the international olympic committee (if anyone could say whether or not something is a sport in any way, it would be them) have said that they agree that video games can be considered a type of sport.

granted, a couple years ago i remember arguing on another forum when the same committee chairman claimed that video games could never be a sport, but it seems they were able to be convinced. hopefully you can stop being an asshole and get convinced as well so that we can move on.

Obviously we disagree, and obviously you do not play sports.

But I will still be an asshole as long as you remain a sleazy git. "hopefully you can stop being an asshole"? Bite me.

Video games are not sports, but e-sport. Not sport, e-sport.

definition: Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
Team fortress Two does not cover all of those and if you think it clicking is physical activity then that's like calling chess a sport because you move pieces.

That's why I compared it to a piano, since that is much more physically intensive.

I don't like the term e-sport, it's changing the name just so people don't have to call it a video game.

I think calling it an E-Sport is a cop-out. Can't we just settle in and admit that we're a bunch of nerds that play a videogame competitively? I guess "e-sport" would be more socially acceptable as it makes you sound a bit more professional, but let's face it: there's no money to be made, so it really doesn't become professional IMO..

As for it being a sport? I would say "no" to the original question.

Also: nice bump :P

Obviously it would be stupid to try to make it your main source of income, but $45k for playing videogames isn't bad.

Let me rephrase, there's money to be made, but none of us are going to make it :P

There just isn't enough interest in "e-sports" in America for me to qualify it as a legitimate career path like you're able to do elsewhere. The top Starcraft players in Korea, for example, are just short of national celebrities. You will never, ever, see that kind of fame or fortune go to someone here in the states for playing a videogame. Whether people want to admit it or not, competitive gaming is still a niche. Casual gaming is as widespread and accepted as it ever has been, but for me to consider something a sport, at the very least you need to have a viewer base of non-participants.

I'll go with E-Sports on the computer as part of your argument cause console games (Street fighter any of the major MLG games) make large sums of money however the longevity of playing games is pretty limited after a certain age the newer kids take over its just a cycle like a real sport after a certain age you can't pitch like you used to (there are exceptions). And the opportunity to break into the real money makers is huge almost every street fighter tournament has a break through kid who breaks the top 12 who no one knew before it happens so often in that world the problem with this is that console gaming is not PC gaming and its just not as popular in the states.

I blame Modern Warfare for the whole "casual gaming" thing.

Once that came out, playing videogames suddenly stopped making you a "nerd".
Probably because the people calling others nerds started playing MW..

Sport isn't defined by whether or not you can make money. If that's the case, maybe soccer isn't a sport because out of all the people around the world who play, only the elite make money. Just sayin :P

It really depends on whether or not physical activity is necessary in your definition of sport. I don't see a problem with calling it an E-Sport though.

Go to the bar, find the hotest chick and tell her you play the e-sport of tf2.

Because that's what sports are about, it's not about pride, competition, money blah blah blah... It's for the chicks.
